The Shoes in my closet
By Melanie Pavlides
I was mysteriously awoken by a loud crash coming from my closet. I was snug as a bug in my bed and did not want to explore what the loud noise was, so I tried to snuggle back into bed and try to relax, but my heart was racing out of control thinking about the many things that were happening in my closet at that very minute. As I tossed and turned I could not shake the feeling that someone or worse yet, something was in my closet. As I change positions in my bed once more I heard the faint sound of someone breathing and my heart skips a beat. I spring up onto my bed and stand up right, determined to find whatever it is in my closet. I muster up the courage to step down onto the floor and move forward toward the closet door. My hands begin to shake uncontrollably and I can feel the drips of sweat falling from my brow as I continue forward. I clench the shiny golden door knob, take a deep breath and with all my courage and might quickly opened the door. To my surprise there is a fiery red creature hunched over and devouring my shoes. The creature stopped and turned to look at me. I quickly turned and plopped on my bed. The creature rose from the squatting position and glared at me. I could see his big triangular bluish green eyes and his crooked flat pink nose, and his very large, butter yellow teeth that looked like jaws. He was drooling profusely and breathing heavily. It was kind of like the sound of an airplane engine about to take off and the sight of the Niagara Falls. His oval shaped head was quite a bit larger than his stubby body; it looked as if he would tip over at any time. He had one longer arm and orange colored hands with very long and scary looking claws. He took a step toward me and I was so frightened that all I could do was stare at it with my blanket nearly covering my face. As the creature walked toward me, I could see his shiny red body and that he wore a torn yellow diaper. It appeared to me that he was sweating all over. He was finally at the foot of my bed and he snarled at me, then he roared, then he raised his orange paws and snatched my blanket from hands. At that moment, I do not know what got into me but I jumped on my bed and ran to the creature and smacked him square in the face. I yelled “you have no right to come in my room and eat my shoes and then scare me half to death, SHAME ON YOU!” In that instant it was like I was channeling my mother. To my amazement the creature clenched his face and began to howl and cry in pain. He did this for so long that I began to feel bad for the creature and offered to help him. He just scowled at me with his odd bluish watery eyes and leaped from my window to never be seen or heard from again.

Crazy, passoniate or just wishing
I am a teacher in Las Vegas, Nevada. That being said our state is ranked very low on the national scale. I have worked my butt off trying new things, inspiring students and have even developed a mentor program. So, I do not feel that the rank my state was given is an accurate representation of how well my students learn! Also I feel that teaching the old school way is DEAD! This is why I am working on my masters in technology and education. As teachers I feel like we need to do anything we can to have help students reach their potential. And one way I see that happening is through the integration of technology. Kids know a lot about technology and can navigate the internet so why is my state continuing to teach the same old way. It's not working. One day I would like to see a regular classroom fully integrated with technology and centered around student learning. Am I crazy, passionate or just wishing... MJP
